Product Review: ONCHOICE 4 Ports USB 3.0 Hub with On/Off Switch
Disclaimer: I provide honest reviews of products that I receive for free or at discounted rates.
The ONCHOICE 4 Ports USB 3.0 Hub with On/Off Switch is a plug-and-play externally powered 4 port USB 3.0 hub with individual on/off power switches for each of the ports.
The hub itself is about 4 inches (10 cm) long and 1 1/2 inches (3.7 cm) wide. It includes a USB 3.0 ribbon-style flexible cable that is just about 16 inches (about 40.5 cm) long and a 120V 5V 2A DC power adapter. As for the plug-and-play nature of the USB hub, it was immediately detected and installed without requiring any third-party drivers on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The transfer rates on connected devices are just marginally slower than when directly connecting to the USB 3.0 port directly, but the loss in transfer speed is less than 1%, which is to be expected for an external hub like this.
The individual power switches on the USB ports is a nice touch, with each port being illuminated by a blue LED light when power is on. The lights themselves are not exceptionally bright– that is to say, they wont be acting as a night light if you leave your computer on in a dark room– but just bright enough to clearly indicate which ports are currently being powered and which ones are not.
The only real downside to the hub is that the power adapter is horizontal to the outlet, which is all-but-guaranteed to block any additional outlets next to it if you’re plugging it into a power strip or surge protector instead of directly into a wall outlet.
As far as USB hubs go, it definitely does its job well. I’ve owned much lower quality hubs, that I paid a much higher price for, than the ONCHOICE 4 Ports USB 3.0 Hub with On/Off Switch. If you’re looking for a good quality USB 3.0 hub with external power, I’d recommend this one.
